origins of Kargil Vijay Diwas lie in the Kargil
War, a high-altitude conflict fought in the summer of 1999 between India
and Pakistan, after Pakistani troops and militants infiltrated strategic peaks
across the Line of Control in the Dras, Kargil, and Batalik sectors of Jammu
and Kashmir. The enemy’s occupation of these peaks posed a grave threat to the
critical Srinagar-Leh National Highway, thereby endangering the lifeline of
Ladakh and the security of the entire region. In response, the Indian Army launched
Operation Vijay, a meticulously
planned military campaign that lasted nearly three months, featuring intense
combat under treacherous weather and topographical conditions. Indian troops
confronted daunting challenges: scaling sheer cliffs, enduring hostile
temperatures, and facing constant enemy fire. Despite these adversities, the
forces displayed tenacity, skill, and patriotic valor, successfully recapturing
vital positions such as Tololing, Tiger
Hill, Point 5140, and Batra Top—names now etched into India’s collective
memory as symbols of heroism. The war officially concluded on July 26, 1999,
with India regaining control over all occupied posts. The conflict incurred a
heavy toll, with over 500 Indian soldiers laying down their lives and more than
